EDU 235 ePortfolio Work

Home
Hi! My name is Anna Boghigian and I am a freshman at Southern New Hampshire University. My major is Elementary Education with a certification in Special Education. I absolutely love reading and writing. I have worked at a daycare for years and can't wait to go back this summer. I find spending time with children to be so much fun and sometimes I get more out of it than they get from me.

Vision
Technology is a tool that should be used in the classroom. It can be beneficial to both students and teachers. Computers can teach children in ways educators cannot. Technology is a great asset to have in the classroom. It can help children in ways teachers and books cannot compete. As long as it is utilized in appropriate ways and is used in conjunction with other teaching methods, it should be incorporated in all classrooms.

When in the classroom, children using technology can learn things in different ways. Computers create another opportunity for teachers to help their students. According to Integrating Educational Technology into Teaching (IETT), technology "supplies self-paced learning for accelerated students" (Roblyer 25) as well as "turns disabilities into capabilities" (Roblyer 25).

In my math class I have this year, we work online so I can get ahead if I am ready to when the rest of the class is not. It works well because I am able to keep myself going instead of waiting for others. IETT also talks about the benefits for children with disabilities with technology. They "depend on technology to compensate for vision, hearing..." (Roblyer 25).

While technology can help students get ahead and help students with disabilities, another positive factor to education is everything that comes with computers and the different machines. The different software programs out there such as resume-builders and different templates and databases are useful for students throughout all grades. Computers give them something that they cannot always find otherwise.

Lesson Plan

Lesson Plan #1

Common Core Standard: (Grade 5)
Text Types and Purposes:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.5.1
Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.5.1.A
Introduce a topic or text clearly, state an opinion, and create an organizational structure in which ideas are logically grouped to support the writer's purpose.

Learner Outcomes:

-Students will be able to state an opinion.
-Students will be able to demonstrate their opinion through grouped supporting reasons.
-Students will be able to demonstrate an organized and structured group of sentences.

Assessment:

-Students will print/email a paper they have typed about their opinion and facts about the book/author.
-The paper will include reasons for their opinion as well as being organized with structured thoughts.

Resources:
-computers for children to use and share if needed
-a book to base their opinions on

Anticipatory Set:
-Students will be asked to pick a book from the classroom, the library, or their home (If there are not multiple days/weeks this can be done, ask the students to pick a book they have read or a short picture book).
-The students will be given class time to read their books (if time permits).
-The teacher will discuss opinions and what they are by saying, “Look around the room and give me an opinion you have on something. Examples could be about a color you see that you like or dislike, or something you wish you could change.”
-The students will go through things they like and dislike in the classroom to reiterate what an opinion is.

Procedure:
-The teacher will have the students take notes or will hand out a piece of paper with the instructions on it.
-The instructions will include the teacher saying: “Everyone is required to read or reread a book of their choice. Once you have completed the book, we will be working on a book report. Your report will be about an opinion you have on the book. It can be about the book as a whole and why you liked it or why you did not. It can also be about specific characters and what you thought of them.”
-The paper will be typed out and done on the computer. The teacher will explain how they are going to be using computers and technology to help with the paper. “The final copy will be done on the computer. It needs to be typed out and either printed or emailed to me. While it is not a research paper, you will need to add facts from the internet about the author or just the book in general. I can help you get started researching, if you get stuck.”

Lesson Plan #2 Idea

-For this lesson, students will be looking into different cultures and areas around the world. Students are going to start at Mount Washington. Students will get this URL, http://www.mountwashington.org/photos/journal/ on a word document so they can cut and paste it into a web page, or they will get directions on a sheet of paper as to how to find it. Students will be asked to find a picture from each site and put it on a word document from each place.

-After Mount Washington, children are going to be traveling to castles around the world. At the site, http://www.3dmekanlar.com/en/3d-castles.html, they will be able to pick any castle. One the same word document, they will be asked to click on the moving box to the right to make it full screen. There students will be able to tour the castle area. Instead of a picture, students will read the paragraph about the castle that is provided on the site and give one fact about the area.

-Next students will go to google maps and type in “Amazon River.” They will be able to search the area and find a picture to put on the sheet they are given. For their fourth area, they will be able to find their own place to look up and state one fact on the document.

-Students will be assessed by whether they fill out the sheet of paper. They need to have two pictures and two facts and show that they “visited” four areas.
